About Ashtakoot Gun Milan
The Ashtakoot (eight qualities) system is the traditional Vedic method for assessing marriage compatibility. It assigns a total of 36 points across eight kootas, each evaluating a different dimension of the couple's compatibility — from physical attraction and temperament to health, longevity and spiritual alignment.
A score of 18 or above out of 36 is traditionally considered the minimum for a compatible match. Scores of 25 and above are considered very good, and 32 or above is considered excellent.
Beyond the total score, certain specific mismatches — such as same-Nadi Dosha (0/8 on Nadi) or same-Bhakoot score of 0 — carry special significance and require consultation with an astrologer for proper remedies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Traditionally, 18 out of 36 is the minimum acceptable score. Scores of 25–32 are considered good to very good, and 32 or above is considered an excellent match. However, the score alone is not sufficient — specific doshas like Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha must also be examined.
Nadi Dosha occurs when both individuals share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya). In classical Vedic astrology, Nadi Dosha is considered the most serious dosha and is traditionally said to affect health and fertility. A qualified astrologer can assess the severity and suggest specific pujas or remedies.
This tool calculates the Ashtakoot score based on Rashi and Nakshatra alone. A full Kundli matching by an astrologer additionally checks Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction), planetary placements in the 7th house, longevity, and other factors from both complete birth charts.
